CAN’T FOOL YOU… OR CAN I?

Why do we play tricks on April Fools Day?

April Fools or All Fools Day is thought to have started in France about 500 years ago. At that time, New Year’s Day was celebrated on April 1. People had many parties and celebrations just as we do today.

But, 450 years ago New Year’s Day was changed to January 1. Back then news didn’t travel as fast as it does today, and some people didn’t hear about it, or if they did they didn’t believe it. These people continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Others around them knew better and played tricks on them. They would try to make them believe that something false was true and called them April Fools.

In France today, children fool their friends by taping a paper fish to someone’s back. When the person finally finds out they shout ‘Poisson d’Avril’ which means ‘April Fish’!
April Fools jokes are meant for fun. The best jokes are the ones that leave everyone laughing, including the April Fool.
