Not Just for Kids

Who is Matthew Henson?

You've heard about the adventuresome Admiral Robert Peary, credited with discovering the North Pole. But have you heard about Matthew Henson? Henson, a 21-year-old African American born in Charles County, Maryland, joined Peary as a navigational expert in 1887. After surveying a canal route through Nicaragua, the two took on their next adventure into the frigid Arctic Circle. After six polar expeditions together, Henson, Peary and four Inuit Eskimos earned credit as the first men to reach the North Pole on April 6, 1909.
