A new website takes the sting out of your summer by predicting jellyfish migration patterns

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water — it is. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has created a website that forecasts the location of sea nettles throughout the Chesapeake and its tributaries. NOAA colors the Bay map according to a sliding population scale, using bright red for heavily infested and cool blue for jelly-free swim zones. To predict nettle nests in the water, scientists relied on their knowledge of environmental factors. Using satellite...

Week 23: Too Hot Even for Osprey

All three are now gone from view most of the day. They are probably sitting up in trees to keep out of the sun. It has been blistering lately. I don’t know if any fishing lessons are going on. I haven’t seen any from my window, but that’s usually the next step after the young ones get flight proficient. Mother doesn’t feed Junior any more, but she stands next to him and lets him eat. He should be catching his own food pretty soon. He stays on the nest site with his mom...

To play with them, you need to know the rules

The Chesapeake had at last become quiet. The Bay’s summertime revelers — with their boats, jet skis and water toys — had fled home hours ago. Even the gulls were finally mute, settling into their roosts for the evening. But as deep darkness descended, my fishing partner, Christian, and I sat motionless at anchor in my small skiff positioned about 100 feet from a heavy rock jetty. Fish Are Biting The rockfish live-lining bite remains incredible this summer. It is as sure a...

A bunch of knuckleheads clunk their coconuts together unto fiery concussion in this wreck of an action flick.

Barney (Sylvester Stallone: Rambo) is a mercenary who’s just gotten back from killing Somali pirates for a shipping company when he gets a new lead. Some banana republic general is stirring up trouble with his small army, and Bruce Willis wants either Barney or Arnold Schwarzenegger to take him out. Not to dinner at Planet Hollywood, either. Barney accepts the apparent suicide mission and musters his mercs. So unfolds an effort at epic action, a flick driven by the quest to pool Hollywood...

In the water, on the land and in the heavens, fall is on the way

The gibbous moon waxes to full Tuesday, traveling through the rising constellations of autumn. At one time, great sturgeon filled America’s waterways each August as they fattened up for the coming cold, and so this full moon was called the Sturgeon Moon. But these days the fish are so scarce they are off limits to anglers. Today, reflecting our modern, agrarian society, August’s full moon is called the Corn Moon and the Grain Moon. Against the glow of the moon, its neighboring...
Dear Bay Gardener I have a few blueberry bushes that are about seven years old that have produced nicely but are getting a little scraggly. I have been trimming runners and eliminating water shoots, but I’m not certain of the best time to prune the large bushes for renewal growth. Instinct tells me that pruning in late summer or early fall would give them a chance for growth once the weather cools, but I would love to have your expert advice. I always read your column in Bay Weekly....
Dear Bay Weekly: Because American jobs are important, I think Bay Weekly should keep its readers informed as to where the wind generators coming to Anne Arundel County are manufactured. It’s my understanding some of the president’s stimulus money went to China for the purchase of wind generators made in China to be used in a wind farm in Texas. Clearly that would support Chinese jobs. It makes sense to support our economy and only use wind generators made here in the USA! –...
Dear Bay Weekly: Thank you for your lovely editorial [Aug. 5] about the new Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center in Prince Frederick. Many people had a dream of an indoor aquatic center going back 25 years. I got on board about 16 years ago. The dream of a community pool where everyone could learn and exercise year-round seemed so doable at the time. With persistence, that dream is now a wonderful reality enjoyed by so many like you. This exceptional addition to our community gets kudos wherever I go...
Dear Bay Weekly: I can’t recall a time in the recent past that I was ever more proud to be an American then I was on August 14. On that day, I had the distinct privilege to stand along Route 260 at 7:15am along with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of other Americans and welcome a busload of wounded soldiers from The Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. These American heroes were coming to the Chesapeake Beach area for a weekend of fishing and relaxation, and that’s exactly...

So don’t quit trying to have too much fun

On Tuesday, August 24, school resumes in both Anne Arundel and Calvert counties, and it’s back to work for not only those tens of thousands of students but also for principals, teachers, counselors, librarians, cafeteria workers, custodians and school bus drivers. For as long as my soon-to-be 10-year-old grandson Jack Knoll lives in Anne Arundel County, where he was born — or at least until he graduates high school — he’s likely to celebrate his August 25 birthday in the...
