Picadillo’s
Owner: Natalie Katt
Hours: W-Su 11am-6pm
7628 Bayside Road • Chesapeake Beach • 410-257-7000

You’re never too far east to long for the Southwest, which is how Picadillo’s came to Chesapeake Beach.

Stroll into Picadillo’s for gifts and decor from the lands of deserts, cacti, bright colors and adobe. Picadillo’s has silver jewelry, mirrors, decor books, candles, rustic Mexican pine furniture, pillows, pottery, Oaxacan wood carvings, framed art, lamps, margarita mixes, hot popcorn, tortilla chips, coffee and soups.

Custom gift baskets can be made up to order with anything in store, then neatly shrink-wrapped for gift giving.

Natalie Katt’s passion for southwestern decor came from living in various areas of the western United States.

“It’s been all around me every place I’ve lived,” says owner Natalie Katt. “I like the rustic-ness of it, and the colors: very vibrant, bright colors.”

The rustic charm abounds in Katt’s store, a 95-year-old house where the southwestern colors are set off against a white-with-turquoise-trim interior. Katt’s items are grouped in different rooms; head to the kitchen to find all of our spicy and zesty needs.

But you don’t have to give away all your brilliant finds as gifts.

If you want to incorporate southwestern allure to your home, Katt advises starting with one big item, then building off that.

“Simply enjoy decorating,” she says.

Chesapeake Wrap and Wellness
Owners: Dawn and Ken Murvin
Hours: TuWTh 10am-7pm; F 9am-7pm;

Helping you reach your wellness and fitness goals is the goal of Chesapeake Wrap and Wellness, a brand-new health and wellness center in Dunkirk.

Chesapeake Wrap is the only local spa offering Egyptian Body Wraps, which slim you down by detoxifying and drawing out metabolic waste. Or you can choose a wrap to address a particular need: energy, anti-aging or lipase reduction. Other services include customized UV-free spray Tanning, massage, steam therapy and infra-red therapy. Top-end skin-care products, vitamins, minerals and lotions help you preserve the good effects of your wraps and treatments.

Owners Dawn and Ken Murvin began their wellness business when, entering their 40s, they sought to improve their health through fitness and diet. They discovered Egyptian Mineral Body Wraps, which made them feel years younger as well as leaner. Such discoveries were too good to keep to themselves. Thus began Chesapeake Wrap and Wellness.

The key, the Murvins say, is to complement a wellness plan that fits your lifestyle with services like theirs.

“People feel very cleansed when we unwrap them,” says Ken Murvin. “And we can measure them and show them the inches they lost.”

Annmarie Garden
Director: Stacey Hann-Ruff
Hours: Daily 10am-5pm
13480 Dowell Rd. • Dowell • 410-326-4640
www.annmariegarden.org

Every day is memorable and the holidays even more so at Annmarie Garden. Calvert County’s public sculpture garden, located on Dowell Road, just above Solomons is a Smithsonian affiliate, currently showcasing 10 steel and bronze outdoor sculptures on loan from the Hirshorn Sculpture Garden.

Along the paths of these 30 wooded acres, you can always find the Annmarie Garden’s own famous oyster-tonger sculpture; suspension bridge sculpture that reaches out into the trees; and the Council Ring, which is both sculpture and performance space.

Annmarie Garden also hosts events throughout the year: weekend art shows, Artsfest, Tales for a Haunted Trail and Mind Body Spirit in the Garden.

A land donation from Francis Koenig began the gardens 12 years ago as a memorial to his wife. Now the garden blossoms with public art and happy people.

You’re attracted by both art and nature.

“It’s very secluded,” says program assistant Jaimie Jeffrey. “It’s sort of hidden: It’s a nice place
to happen onto.”

It’s even more brilliant at Christmas time, when the garden lights up to enchant drivers.

5720 Deale-Churchton Rd. • Deale • 410-867-6442 • www.fracturedprune.com

Bringing you hot, hand-dipped donuts while you wait is the brand-new Fractured Prune in Deale. But before you can sink your teeth into a doughy treat, you have a few tough decisions.

First select from their many glazes, which include honey, chocolate, raspberry, lemon, peanut butter and maple. Then top off your donut with a variety of sugars, sprinkles, peanuts, Oreo Cookies, chocolate chips or coconut.

Popular orders, says owner Chris MacQuilliam, include French Toast: maple glaze dusted with cinnamon sugar; Butterfinger: chocolate glaze with Butterfinger topping; and Sand: honey glaze with cinnamon sugar.

Inspired by Ocean City’s donut shoppes visited during childhood vacations, MacQuilliam and Gary Guzzi have brought their favorite delicacy to the Western Shore to be savored year-round.

“We love watching people take their first bite into a hot donut: their faces melt,” says MacQuilliam.

Love for donuts runs in the family. Both of MacQuilliam’s children work in the shop.

“Feel free to get creative and silly with our donuts,” says MacQuilliam.

Accompanying their famous donuts are Seattle’s Best Coffee, milk and a variety of juices.

Clutter Control
Owner: Linda Doyle
Hours: By appointment
6913 Prout Road • Friendship • 410-257-9229

This year, fall cleaning can mean more than sighing in resignation at disorganization and chaos in your house. Consult with Linda Doyle of Clutter Control to organize any area or room of your home — files, kitchen pantries, attics, basements, bedrooms, bathrooms, closets and home offices. No room is too scary for Clutter Control: They’ve even conquered teenagers’ bedrooms and helped newlyweds design an organizational system for a new kitchen.

Controlling clutter isn’t a small problem in the lives of busy people. Linda Doyle and her assistant make suggestions for improvements with shelves and carpentry as they guide you out of chaos and help you to regain your living space.

“We make it fun,” says owner Linda Doyle, who began the two-year-old business after helping friends organize their attics and rooms. Linda Doyle’s love of motivating others shines through in her work, she says.

“I find joy in working with people to improve their lives,” says Doyle. “We set you up with a system that makes life easier.”

Motivation, in this case, is about showing you how to take control of little things that obstruct you from your dreams.

“We use the stay method of Sorting, Tossing and Arranging,” says Doyle. “The Y stands for, yes, you want it to stay that way. Isn’t that everyone’s dream?”
