Beach Business Group
President: Lynda Striegel
P.O. Box 858 • North Beach

There is strength in numbers. That’s a strength the 60-plus beach area businesses enjoy as members of Beach Business Group. Serving businesses in North Beach, Chesapeake Beach and surrounding areas, Beach Business Group unites small business owners who celebrate the Twin Beaches area by supporting one another, sponsoring community events and funding worthy causes. The group also organizes networking opportunities for its members. There’s a community focus, too, as Beach Business Group helps sponsor events. This month, it’s a Halloween event in North Beach.

Become a member and join them for regular meetings on the third Wednesday of each month to keep informed of what’s going on in the Twin Beaches business community and how you can use Beach Business Group to fortify your business.

See for yourself how many area businesses have already joined the team.

“Look for a member business sticker on stores and establishments,” says secretary Susan Skelly. You’ll be in good company.

Sun, sand, twilight and tropical evenings don’t have to end with summer. At Calypso Bay you’ll find an all-season relaxing atmosphere worthy of a Caribbean island.

With four different atmospheres within one restaurant, you’re sure to find the perfect ambiance for your evening: candle-lit waterfront dining with duel fireplace; a contemporary lounge bar for quiet conversation with acoustic entertainment; a sports bar where you can cheer the game with friends; and during the warm days of fall, the tiki bar with sand under your feet and palm trees overhead with live entertainment.

Voted Number One sports bar by Bay Weekly readers, Calypso Bay boasts televisions in every direction, including both a plasma and large-screen television, so that with their NFL ticket, you can see any game at any time. There’s also fun to be found with pool and darts, Keno and Maryland’s best live entertainment.

While you’re entertained, take advantage of the daily specials offered, which give you the best value for quality food.

Five years ago, owner Mike Brown put his dream into reality, creating a multi-complex restaurant-bar with a variety of atmospheres.

With palm trees, seafood, drinks and sand, what does Brown value most?

“We wouldn’t be where we are without our customers,” he says. “I love making this a place where people want to come and spend time.”

Bittersweet Hill Nurseries
Owner Hildreth Morton
Hours: 9am-6pm
1225 Governor Bridge Rd., Davidsonville • 410-798-0231

Fall is in bloom at Bittersweet Hill Nurseries, where you’ll discover an abundance of herbs, house plants, water plants, perennials and annuals. Perennials outside the greenhouses range from wildflowers to ferns. An entire greenhouse dedicated to herbs is sure to be popular for indoor kitchen gardens this season, says owner Hildreth Morton.

“We also have a lot of unusual plants that the big market doesn’t have,” adds Morton. Aquatic plants, such as water lilies, are joined by fish, tadpoles and snails set to inhabit your own pond. This season, Morton advises you to take out your water pump so warm water will stay at the bottom; get a special pond heater to keep a hole in the ice; and stop feeding your fish when the water temperature sinks below 50 degrees.

Before it became a place for aquatic advice and blossoms, Bittersweet Hill used to be a tobacco farm, says Morton. When the barn blew down, she built the first greenhouse. Starting small, with one cold-frame house, she has expanded to three large greenhouses plus outside gardens and displays in her 45 years in business

Everyone’s invited to Bittersweet’s Christmas party on December 4 and 5, where you’ll sip eggnog and see demonstrations on how to make wreaths and other Christmas decorations. The gardens on display — from a plant-flanked waterfall pond to a fairy garden for children — will inspire you to build the garden of your dreams.

For your own gardens and plantings, Bittersweet staff will help you along the way.

“Here at Bittersweet, we have the time to be helpful and tell people how to grow what they’ve bought,” says Morton. “Our value isn’t just handing customers a pot. It’s about helping them know how to care for and where to put their plants.”

Among original floral arrangements you’ll find fruit baskets, gift baskets, dish-gardens, plants and custom silk arrangements. The treasures displayed in their gift shop include a wonderful collection of lighthouses featuring Harbour Lights; also giftware, clocks and candles; paintings, photographs, jewelry and wood carvings by local artists; and a year-round Christmas room.

Owner Richard Penfield has been designing floral arrangements for over 30 years. After 15 years in his Connecticut home town, where he learned the florist business and designing, Penfield designed in flower shops in Washington, D.C., and Annapolis before coming to North Beach.

“I love the creative part of my job,” says Penfield. “I design for all occasions, including weddings and sympathy.”

Hurricane Isabel hit North Beach businesses hard, with 44 days when no one walked in the door of the florist shop.

“We’ve been through some trying times,” says Penfield. “But we’re coming back bigger and stronger than ever.”

With a stronger business, due in part to the Beach Business Group and the Southern Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce, Richard’s Bayside Florist is eager to welcome you into the shop.

“Everyone’s a guest when they walk in the door here,” says Penfield. “And I’m happy to see them.”
