Unearth the 18th century at Jefferson Patterson Park when the Smith family home opens for excavation. Herrington Harbour Fireworks ~ FREE

Spend the evening at the harbor’s outdoor festival, feasting and browsing local crafts (5pm). At dusk, fireworks shoot into the sky, coloring the harbor with their twinkling light. Independence Day

Celebrate the 233rd anniversary of the day we declared independence from England.

Celebrate in Historic Style ~ Free

Start Independence Day by welcoming new citizens to America at a naturalization ceremony. Later, tour the Paca home, listening to music and visiting re-enactors at a Revolutionary War encampment. Costumed interpreters portray the Pacas and greet you; get a colonial consult with Dr. Alexander Dobbs. Old Fashioned Fourth ~ Free

The Kiwanis Club kicks off Shady Side’s Fourth of July festivities with a parade down Shady Side Road. Flares, Felicitations in Annapolis ~ FREE

Annapolis steps into the celebrations with a parade of patriotic marchers and floats — traveling over Amos Garrett Blvd., West St., Main St., Randall St. and ending at Market House on City Dock (6:30pm). The state capital celebrates with fireworks over the Severn River at about 9:15pm launched from a barge. Boaters get a great view from Annapolis harbor — but remember to maintain a safe distance from the barge, and listen to the Coast Guard, as boating access is restricted after 8:30pm — while landlubbers watch from Susan C. Campbell Park, City Dock, The Naval Academy Bridge or any street-end park facing Spa Creek. This year, Farragut Field is closed to public viewers, but limited areas will be open at Gate #1 (5pm), for viewers with picture ID. Come at 8pm for the U.S. Naval Academy Band’s annual concert at City Dock, where the Electric Brigade premiers a rock version of the 1812 Overture. Cruise by Illuminations

Celebrate at Solomons ~ FREE

Solomons lights up the sky with its annual fireworks show. In response to popular demand, the fireworks return to Solomons Riverwalk this year, with illuminations shooting from a barge anchored in the Patuxent River. The entire island has a front row seat to the light show, with fireworks coating the night sky. Fireworks start at dusk (about 9pm). free: 410-326-1950. Revolutionary London Town

Celebrate Independence Day 18th century style.
