My grandmother Teresa Armentrout, right, started my mom, Linda Bigley, left, in dance classes in Washington, D.C., starting at 4 or 5 years old. As my mom became a teen, she started to assist and teach classes on her own. She also began traveling to New York City on the weekends for dance auditions. Her mom  made all her costumes and traveled regardless of the cost to get her to her auditions and shows. During one of these auditions, she was chosen to be one of the famed New York City Rockettes. She performed at several USO shows for the military with headliners such as Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. But she was never able to perform as a Rockette at Rockefeller Center because at rehearsals before the show she tore all the ligaments in her knee. Although her stint with the Rockettes was short, her dance career continued after with teaching and choreographing.
