Big Heart Month at SPCA
August is Big Heart Month at SPCA, where a heart on the cage indicates a special furry friend — with some medical or behavioral problem — who is waiting to be adopted at no cost to you. The adoption of these special needs pets is made possible by an anonymous donor in loving memory of Michael and Anne March.
The shelter has also recently added 10 dogs — rescued from a hoarder in Arkansas — in need of happy homes.
Dog Days at CalvART
Dog Days have come to CalvART Gallery, a permanent exhibit space for artists from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties. All month long, see artists’ portrayals of cats and dogs. Purchases benefit Calvert Animal Welfare League.
W-Su 11am-5pm, CalvArt Gallery, Prince Frederick: 410-535-9252; www.calvartgallery.org
Ben’s Auction and Parties
Thursday, August 22 and Friday, August 30
Paws Bet Boutique isn’t satisfied with the $35,000 it’s already raised for animal charities. So Ben’s Auction returns to bring in more, specifically to benefit the Animal Legal Defense League. Ben’s Fabulous Auction kicks off August 22 with a party at Niland & Company jewelers on Maryland Avenue in Annapolis. Well-behaved pups get treats; refreshments are served to humans. You’ll get a preview of auction items, including jewelry contributed by Niland, with a portion of all purchases benefitting the League (6-8pm).
Ben, the project’s mascot, is a rescued Jack Russell terrier who works at Paws.
Friday August 30, Paws sponsors Canines and Cocktails (5:30-7:30pm), where you and you animal companion enjoy drinks, snacks and treats at Loew’s Annapolis Hotel’s West Kitchen & Tavern, Annapolis.

SPCA Puppy Plunge
Sunday, August 25
Returning after last year’s big inaugural splash is SPCA of Anne Arundel County’s Puppy Plunge, when two- and four-legged plungers alike rush into the South River at Camp Letts. On the human side, the family-friendly festival includes canoeing, a moon bounce, Lego craft tables, volleyball, a bazaar of animal-related wares and live music from Them Eastport Oyster Boys — plus, of course, good things to eat.
Dogs have opportunities, too. Pups have their pick of two beaches for the plunge: Muscle Beach for bigger breeds and Petite Beach for smaller dogs. Pups strut in the spotlight for Plunge’s two contests: Best in Bikini and Ugliest Dog.
All ages welcome, with dogs or without, on this day of unleashed fun in support of Anne Arundel’s independent SPCA, who help us keep our animal relationships good and fair.
Noon-4pm, Camp Letts, Edgewater. $5: 410-268-4388 x142; www.aacspca.org

Do one-stop shopping for your next pet at Anne Arundel County Animal Control Shelter in Millersville. The Adopt-a-Thon combines the joy of adopting a furry friend with all the fun of a carnival. Food, live music and exotic display of birds, snakes and other not-so-furry friends make the Adopt-a-Thon fun for kids and adults. Adoptions, of course, make new homes possible for rescued animals.
Anne Arundel County Animal Control Shelter collects and accepts stray and relinquished animals. Animals not redeemed are placed for adoption after five days. Creatures of many species — from birds to rabbits as well as cats and dogs — need homes. Rabies vaccinations ($5) and microchipping ($20) are done Thursdays 1-3pm.
Donations and volunteers always needed.

Tiki Bar Family Pet Days
Sunday, October 20
As many as 2,000 dogs and “probably twice as many people” gather at Solomons Tiki Bar October 20 (1-5pm) to get silly in honor of interspecies connections, according to Jean Radeackar of Patuxent Animal Welfare Society, which benefits from the fun. In honor of Halloween, many creatures come in costume for one of a series of friendly competitions, also including owner-pet look alike, best-trick and pie-eating contests. In the latter, both dogs and humans set into pies, pudding and whipped cream for humans, chicken and rice for dogs, who often finish first, then help out their humans. All ages and species welcome.
