Murdock Did It His Way

I enjoyed the March 14 story about Billy Murdoch and his father Gilbert, the Annapolis-born rogue back in the 19th century. You call him a ne’er-do-well, and you may be right considering he was a bigamist and did time for bad checks. But he lived quite the life that today’s couch potato guys could admire, from fathering a cricket legend to fighting in the Mexican-American war to landing in the California goldfields, where he became mayor of a town. What’s that song, I Did It My Way? Seems like Gilbert did, even demanding that his name be spelled Murdock.
